Ambient Pixel Display
The display you don't have to check.
Status: Released
A calm companion for a small pixel display on the shelf. It shows the time, the sky and what matters soon, and stays quiet the rest of the time.
Why I started
Most screens at home compete for attention. I wanted the opposite: a tiny display that lives in the room, offers something worth a glance when the moment calls for it, and is otherwise beautiful, sparse or nearly empty.
What it does
- Cycles calmly between the clock and a few cards: weather, wind, rain, sunrise and sunset, the moon, the next commitment and a to-do.
- Runs focus countdowns and moods that change what appears, and goes dark during quiet hours.
- Flags interesting aircraft approaching a nearby airport, with the airline and route. (Yes, I’m kinda of an aviation nerd)
- Has a phone remote, and falls back to a plain clock if anything stops.
Approach
A small Python service on an always-on Mac mini decides what to show, and the display just draws it. The guiding rule is to be useful, ambient and a little alive: one idea at a time, with the occasional moment of personality.
